The International Code Council’s (ICC) committee action hearings last week in Dallas included a myriad of proposals related to the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), one of which was specific to window film.

An approved proposal, CE11-13, will adapt section C101.4.3 (the commercial portion of the IECC), “Additions, alterations, renovations or repairs.” The section of the code contains a list of exceptions noting that “the following need not comply provide the energy use of the building is not increased.”

While the list already contained items such as storm windows installed over existing fenestration and glass-only replacements in an existing sash and frame, Vickie Lovell of Intercode Inc., representing the International Window Film Association (IWFA), proposed that the following exception also be added:

“Existing single-pane fenestration assemblies with surface-applied window film to reduce solar heat gain.”

The proposal was approved with a modification, using the language below, according to Lovell:

Surface-applied window film installed on existing single pane fenestration assembly to reduce solar heat gain, provided the code does require the glazing or fenestration assembly to be replaced.

“Surface-applied window film to existing fenestration has been added to the list because it can enhance the performance of existing single-pane fenestration products for protection from injuries and property damage due to broken glass, reduces ultraviolet transmittance and glare and improves performance when impacted,” wrote Lovell in her proposal. “The foremost benefit of applied window film to existing windows is reduced solar heat gain and reduced energy use.”

She continued, “While roughly two percent of commercial floor space is newly constructed each year, and a comparable amount renovated, the majority of opportunities to improve efficiency over the next several decades will be in existing building stock. Improving the energy efficiency of existing buildings through retrofitting and other measures will create a high-volume, low-cost approach to reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions … Allowing building owners to have the option to use window film on existing fenestration in order to improve the energy efficiency will create an incentive for reducing energy consumption and greenhouse emissions.”

Lovell’s proposal was approved as modified for both the commercial and residential portions of the code.

Those attending the conference had comments as well. “I am thrilled to welcome the IWFA to California and learn more about their efforts to help grow the industry,” said Tim Gordon.

“After the meeting I have a better understanding of what is being done by the IWFA and now feel very positive about the association,” said Peter Maranan.

Over the next few weeks, we will continue profiling each of the six Supporters you will see on the show floor—be sure to stay tuned.

Once again HanitaTek Window Films is one of the Supporters of the 2013 International Window Film Conference and Tint-Off™ (IWFC). The event is set to be held this September 18-20 in Tampa, Fla., at the Tampa Convention Center and Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel and Marina. The Exhibition/Extravaganza will be held September 18-20.

During the conference, attendees will be able to take part in educational seminars by industry leaders and expert speakers, network on the Exhibition/Extravaganza show floor with window film manufacturers and suppliers and view the Tint-Off™ competitions.

We spoke with Sarah Ortiz, business manager for HanitaTek.

Window Film magazine: Sarah, why did HanitaTek choose to sponsor the 2013 International Window Film Conference and Tint-Off™ (IWFC)?

Ortiz: The IWFC is a unique event in our industry in which we can all get together and learn from one another. There is no other event that draws as many industry professionals into one place, with education and networking being the focus.

Window Film magazine: Why is an event like the IWFC important to the film industry?

Ortiz: It is so important for our dealers to interact and learn from one another. Education on current trends is so valuable to make your business grow and thrive. The more we work together as an industry to be professional and cutting edge, the better the future is for our industry.

Window Film magazine: What can attendees expect to see from HanitaTek at the 2013 show?

Ortiz: HanitaTek is excited to show our new films at the show. Our E-lite 70 spectrally selective film, our XTRM exterior films offering up to a 15-year warranty and our Skylite film for both glass and poly glazing will be featured.

Window Film magazine: Does HanitaTek have any advice for the 2013 Tint-Off™ Automotive and Architectural Division competitors?

Ortiz: The best advice is to have confidence in your work and not to be too psyched out by the event. Act as if this is a job for your best customer and compete against yourself, not the other competitors.

Editor’s Note: Window Film magazine is marking the days until the 2013 International Window Film Conference and Tint-Off™ by introducing this year’s Supporters with company profiles. Over the next few weeks, we will continue profiling each of the six Supporters you will see on the show floor—be sure to stay tuned.

Solar Gard is once again one of our Supporters of the 2013 International Window Film Conference and Tint-Off™ (IWFC).

We spoke with Lawrence Constantin, director of sales, Americas for Solar Gard.

Window Film magazine: Larry, why did Solar Gard choose to sponsor the 2013 International Window Film Conference and Tint-Off™ (IWFC)?
Constantin: The International Window Film Conference is such an important event in the industry—growing every year in significance—and Solar Gard is proud to stand behind both the International Window Film Association (IWFA) and Key Communications (publisher of Window Film magazine) event team. Dealer/installer training and education are crucial to creating successful window film entrepreneurs and we are thrilled to have the chance to be a part of it.

Window Film magazine: Why is an event like the IWFC important to the film industry?
Constantin: Events like the IWFC are a perfect time for everyone in the window film industry to come together and share “tips and tricks” of the trade. Training sessions help advance the progression of the industry, and the Tint-Off competition brings excitement to window film. The event showcases what the IWFA does behind-the-scenes and helps connect dealers with manufacturers, as well as fosters community between fellow dealers. You’ll find the most leading-edge technology and techniques at the IWFC and it’s a great forum for industry announcements and new product debuts.

Window Film magazine: What can attendees expect to see from Solar Gard at the 2013 show?
Constantin: We encourage attendees to stop by our booth and learn more about our comprehensive automotive and architectural film portfolios, now including Solar Gard Ecolux™ 70 Low-E (a new sustainable, all-season low-E window film for homes and commercial properties), Galaxie™ and TrueVue™ film offerings, as well as business expansion opportunities with our Clearshield® paint protection film and ComputerCut® software. Last year we also launched Solar Gard Partner Points, the industry’s first points-based loyalty program, where we say “thank you” by giving back to participating dealers. For every purchase dealers make with Solar Gard, they earn points that can be redeemed for thousands of merchandise options, event tickets or travel opportunities. We love that dealers have already been able to turn their film purchases into everything from the latest Apple and Samsung electronics, to concert tickets to see country superstars like Kenny Chesney, to sporting and outdoors equipment. We also know quite a few are saving up those valuable points to take well-deserved cruise vacations!

Window Film magazine: What do you hope your dealers and distributors can obtain by attending an event like this?
Constantin: Whenever business owners have the opportunity to step outside their environments, they get to see how others just like them operate a similar type of business. These events provide a chance to talk with other dealers, “bounce around” ideas and solutions, share installation techniques and tool preferences, etc. This forum for exchange builds new friendships with other window film professionals, and they can keep in touch with advice, successes and challenges long after the event is over.

Window Film magazine: Does Solar Gard have any advice for the 2013 Tint-Off™ Automotive and Architectural Division competitors?
Constantin: We wish all the competitors the best of luck, and are looking forward to an exciting Tint-Off! We hope you all have a very busy and profitable season and look at every installation as an opportunity to perfect your technique and improve your speed—all in preparation to take home the coveted first place title (and prize money)!

The International Window Film Conference and Tint-Off™ is co-sponsored by Window Film magazine and the International Window Film Association. Auto Glass Week™ also will be held concurrently. The event is managed by Window Film magazine.

Headquartered in San Diego, Calif., Solar Gard makes architectural and automotive window films, photovoltaics and custom coatings and is a division of Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics, a subsidiary of Saint-Gobain, a leader in the habitat and construction markets. Solar Gard products are sold in more than 90 countries under the Solar Gard®, Panorama®, Quantum® and Solar Gard Armorcoat® brands.

The International Window Film Association (IWFA) has reported that California residents could save the equivalent of four million barrels of oil each year, or the annual output of three 500-megawatt power stations, by installing window films on 10 percent of structures built before building energy codes were mandated.

The California Building Standards Commission recently approved a new code which goes into effect in 2014, adopting extensive energy code requirements voted by the California Energy Commission (CEC) in 2012.

“We need to continually look for smart, cost-effective ways to save energy and reduce peak electricity load,” says Commissioner Andrew McAllister of the CEC. “Window film is a product that needs to be considered as an important retrofit solution as we upgrade legacy dwellings in the Golden State.”

Independent analysis conducted by ConSol, a California-based energy consulting firm, shows window film is one of the most cost-effective measures to reduce energy use in California. In fact, window film outpaces traditional techniques such as updating HVAC systems, air sealing and caulking or adding R-38 ceiling insulation. ConSol’s study used many of the same processes the CEC utilizes in determining relative value of energy savings for the state. The complete report can be found here.

In California, there are nearly 9,000,000 dwellings built prior to the energy building codes. By professionally installing window film on just 900,000 dwellings, or 10 percent, ConSol conservatively estimates window film may cut a typical building’s annual energy use by 10 percent. Together this could add up to 7,150,250,000 kilowatt hours. The savings is comparable to what three power plants could produce annually, or the conversion equivalent of 4,000,000 barrels of oil, according to ConSol.

“Without a doubt, window film offers an enormous potential for energy savings in the California market and consumers may not need to replace their windows at all,” says Darrell Smith, executive director of the IWFA. “We hope that policy makers in other states will take California’s lead and develop programs that encourage this extremely cost-effective solution for consumers.”

The International Window Film Association (IWFA) has announced its use of several social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, to engage consumers in discussions on the benefits of installing film.

“We see the combination of our social media and web pages, along with articles in traditional media channels, as an integrated ‘one stop shop’ to educating consumers on the many benefits of window film,” says Darrell Smith, executive director of the nonprofit IWFA. “Social media make[s] the conversation surrounding window film more accessible and consumer-friendly. Window film is an affordable way to update living spaces and consumers deserve to know about it.”

Benefits the IWFA is discussing with consumers include the following points: “Savings on your cooling costs can reach up to 30 percent with window film,” “UV rays entering the living area may fade furnishings, create hot spots and harm the skin, but window film can block up to 99 percent of harmful UV rays,” “For each dollar spent on window film, the money invested can provide more cost-effective energy savings when compared to replacement windows,” and “Window film is a simple way to help reduce your energy use and when installed, it can assist in cutting the demand on utilities, which may further reduce carbon emissions.”

In addition to the executive officers of the board, the IWFA’s nonprofit structure has administrative and standing committees. These are:

“With the combination of experience and innovative leadership coming from board, we can get more done for our members and we know that 2013 will be a year of substantial progress on all fronts,” says Darrell Smith, executive director of the IWFA.

Registration for the 2013 International Window Film Conference (IWFC) and Tint-Off™ has officially opened, following the International Window Film Association’s (IWFA) agreement to serve yet again as co-sponsor with Window Film magazine.

“The IWFA believes that, by working with a partner/co-sponsor such as Window Film magazine, and by including as much of our window film industry as we can, the IWFC event will be the largest and best gathering that will further our goals of bringing value to the window film industry. This includes manufacturers and distributors, in general, and window film dealers in particular,” says Jack Mundy, chair of the IWFA Members Action Committee.

“We look forward to working with members of the IWFA once again for the upcoming event,” says Debra Levy, publisher of Window Film magazine. “We’re expanding the show and hope every window film manufacturer, supplier and retailer can join us.”

The IWFC will be held at the Tampa Convention Center and Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel & Marina in Tampa, Fla., September 18-20. Auto Glass Week™ will also be held concurrently. Attendees can expect to see educational seminars, exhibits and networking in addition to the Tint-Off competitions.
