Ken McAlpin, founder of Solar Gard, died Thursday, November 21, 2013 in Tarpon Springs, Fla. He was 78 years old.
McAlpin founded the company that would become Solar Gard in 1972, according to Tom Smith, his son-in-law and former president of Solar Gard International. McAlpin began by working out of a small garage in Kenneth City, Fla.
Solar Gard is now a division of Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics, which is a subsidiary of Saint-Gobain.
According to an obituary in the Cullman Times, he is survived by his wife, Laraine McAlpin; children, Kenneth and Samantha McAlpin, Angela and Tom Smith, Timothy and Suze McAlpin, Curtis and Stacy Higdon, Melissa and Roy Clack and Laurie Higdon; grandchildren, Jayson Critchfield, Nina and Brad Graham, Whitney and Chelsie Smith, Kellea and Andrew Mozely, Haley McLean, Chandler Clack, Heather and Chow McAlpin, Chrissy and Robby Burdshal, Shelby McAlpin, Ciara McAlpin, Michael Higdon, Parker Higdon, Savannah Higdon and Leslie McAlpin; great-grandchildren, Jordyn and Brody Chritchfield, Levi McAlpin and Aaliyah and Andrew Mozley; four brothers, Ottis (Fay) McAlpin, Tony McAlpin, James (Sue) McAlpin and Manuel (Betty) McAlpin; and a sister, Doris (James) Norred.
