LLumar® Passes Hurricane and Bomb Blast Tests

CPFilms in Martinsville, Va., has announced that recent results from the Hurricane Test Laboratory LLC in Lubbock, Texas, and at Factory Mutual Global Group (FM Global), an insurer of large corporate complexes, have helped prove the effectiveness of its LLUMAR window films against water and debris penetration during hurricanes. Third-party testing was funded for by CPFilms and parent company, Solutia Inc. in St. Louis.

“Anything Mother Nature can throw at you, we can throw at your product,” explains Jeffrey E. Gould, P.E., senior engineering specialist for FM Approvals, a division of FM Global. Gould says water intrusion and related damages continue to be the primary concern for insurance agencies.

LLumar 8 mil clear film was applied to tempered glass and tested to meet FM Global’s small missile requirements. The film also passed subsequent cyclic tests. Film then was applied to annealed glass and tested to meet ASTM E 1886/1996 large missile level “C” requirements, along with subsequent air, water, structural and cyclic tests.

CPFilms reports that its LLumar 8-mil clear film was the only to pass the extremely strenuous missile level “D” requirements when tested in combination with additionally fortified window systems.

“Independent testing and validation adds another layer of assurance about the performance of LLumar films,” says Kent Davies, president of CPFilms.

Davies says product performance and rigorous technical evaluations are important for his company.

“Our dealers, distributors and consumers around the world are in a stronger position as a result of this testing win, and more lives and property will be protected,” he explains.

Several combinations of window films and systems also were tested to meet impulse and pressure requirements of most industry-recognized blast standards. LLumar 8-mil window film achieved a General Services Administration (GSA) condition level 3b at 6 psi, 42 psi-msec on a single-pane window (with and without an attachment system). It achieved a GSA 3b at 12.8 psi, 68 psi-msec on a dual-pane window with an attachment system. To read Window Film’s recent interview with Davies, CLICK HERE.
