North Carolina Senate Bill 855, introduced March 19, 2007, would exempt private investigators licensed by the Private Protective Services Board of the State's Department of Justice from window tinting restrictions. The bill was referred to the Committee on Transportation, which approved and passed it on to the Committee on Judiciary III for review. The bill will have to be passed by the House and Senate, before being passed on to the governor for review.

Illinois House Bill 536 has been approved by the House and Senate and currently is under review by the governor. It provides that the prohibition against tinted windshields and tinted side windows not apply to vehicles owned and operated by persons afflicted with or suffering from a medical illness, ailment or disease requiring that person to be shielded from the direct rays of the sun. In addition, it exempts vehicles used in transporting a person who lives at the same address as the registered owner and is afflicted with or suffers from such an illness, ailment or disease, regardless of the date on which the tinted windows were installed or the tinting was applied.
